First Thursdays at Barkley Square
Come see us the First Thursday of every month through October at Barkley Square in Del Ray (2006 Mount Vernon Avenue). We will have adoptable animals, merchandise and plenty of information about the League and our services to throughout the community. In July and August you will have the opportunity to view and vote on your favorite Pet Calendar photos. We’re looking forward to seeing you!

Somebody to Love -- Your Photos Wanted
"Somebody to Love” is the theme of the 2008 Annual Dinner and Silent Auction and we want YOU to help us celebrate the bond between people and their animal companions.

We are looking for photos of people with their pets for possible inclusion in our event invitation, program and other printed material. Photos should be close-up shots and should reflect the loving relationship between you and your pet. Photos should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and saved as either a jpeg at the highest optimization or as a tiff file with LZW compression.

The deadline for photo submission is September 30, 2008. Please email your photo, your name, the names of everyone in the photo and a sentence or two about your relationship to your pet to dhohenthaner@alexandriaanimals.org Attn: Annual Dinner Photo.

Submission of a photo grants the AWLA the right to publish, use, adapt, edit and/or modify such photos in any way, in any and all media, without limitation and without consideration to the entrant, whether or not such submission is selected for use with this particular event.

AWLA at Hotel Monaco Alexandria
Come party with some of our adoptable dogs in the courtyard of the Hotel Monaco Alexandria in Old Town. We'll be there most Thursdays each month through October from 6-8pm for their Doggie Happy Hour. We'll have the Pet Calendar Photos on display on August 21. Plan to also attend their Doggie Happy Howloween Costume Contest to benefit AWLA on October 30. The Hotel Monaco Alexandria is located at 480 King Street.

Back to School with the Animal Shelter
Fall into learning at the Animal Shelter! Join us for a little bit of learning as school starts up again. On Saturdays and Sundays throughout September, from 10:00am-11:00am, we’ll be holding free mini-seminars on a variety of topics. While our sessions are all about animals, we do ask that you leave your pets at home. Please RSVP to 703/838-4774 ext. 227.

Dog Park Protocol September 13 Heading out to the dog park with your pooch? Not sure if the dog park is the place for your pup? We’ve got lots of tips and suggestions on how to use (or not use) your local dog park.

Tiny and Terrific September 14 Did you know that our shelter has more than dogs and cats for adoption? We often have hamsters, guinea pigs, parakeets, ferrets, chinchillas, iguanas and more! Come see if one might make the right pet for you.

09/07/2008 AWLA at the Wellington Civic Association Annual Fall Picnic
The AWLA is civic minded! We will be guests of the Wellington Civic Association's Annual Picnic at River Farms on September 7 from noon until 3pm. Stop by our tent to say hello and see whom we've brought with us.

09/14/2008 Second Annual "Olde Towne Dogge Walke"
Join Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille and Alexandria Mascot Alex for a morning walk through Olde Town Alexandria. The mile-and-a-half walk will kick off from the Olde Towne School for Dogs at 9 a.m. when Washington-area animal lovers and their four-legged friends take to the streets to raise money for the care of abandoned and homeless animals in the community. The event takes place from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. On-site registration begins at 8 a.m.

The registration fee is $25 per person. Registration forms are available at the Olde Towne School for Dogs (529 Oronoco Street) starting July 28, 2008. A raffle will also be held immediately following the “Olde Towne Dogge Walke,” featuring a number of animal and people-friendly prizes. Tickets for the raffle will be available on-site.

The Second Annual “Olde Towne Dogge Walke” is sponsored by Olde Towne School for Dogs. All proceeds from this event will be donated to AWLA to support animal assistance, shelter and community education programs.

09/28/2008 Rabies and Microchipping Clinic
Bring your dogs and cats to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria on Sunday, September 28 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm for their rabies vaccination and/or have a microchip implanted. A rabies vaccination protects your pet and is required by Virginia State law. Microchips offer permanent identification for your pet. The cost for the rabies vaccination is $10 and only cash and checks are accepted, no credit cards will be accepted for the rabies vaccines. If you would like your pet to receive a three-year vaccination, you will need to provide the appropriate documentation that your pet's rabies shot is still current. Otherwise a one-year vaccination will be given. The cost for microchipping your pet is $30 and payment for microchipping can be made by credit card, check or cash. Appointments are not available. All dogs must be on leash and cats must be in a carrier.
