Pooch Pooch was only 5 months old when this photo was taken in his foster home. He has already been adopted but is here to let you know that we are looking for dedicated, energetic and patient foster parents to care for underage and underweight puppies and kittens as well as animals recovering from illness, surgery or help with behavioral issues. We need foster parents to provide them with a warm, friendly place to live until they can be considered for adoption. Foster parents will care for animals in their own homes on a temporary basis. Parents will feed, socialize, administer medication, groom and train foster animals according to the guidelines set forth by the League. The time commitment may range from a few days to several weeks, from a few hours a day to round-the-clock care, depending upon the age and situation of each fosterling. The League will provide you with the training and supplies that you and your young charges require. You provide the tender loving care and attention these fosterlings crave. Fostering a young animal can be hard work. It can be difficult, frustrating, and sometimes heartbreaking. It is also one of the most rewarding experiences an animal lover can have. Fostering saves lives! If you are interested in becoming a foster parent for the League, please contact Diann Hohenthaner, Foster Program Coordinator at 703/838-4774 x216 or dhohenthaner@alexandriaanimals.org.

Pebbles Pebbles is a three-month-old Pit Bull/Shar Pei mix who really enjoys being with people. She came to the shelter as a stray with Bam Bam. Pebbles loves treats and is very easy to get along with, but she can be a little timid at times. We consider her to be a “level 1” dog because she would be great with owners of any experience level. We recommend that Pebbles live with children that are 8 years or older.

Jesse If Jesse were human, we think she’d probably be a librarian, as she has an incredibly quiet and thoughtful personality. Yet at times, we see glimpses of her more high-spirited side. Jesse is an 8-year-old Border Collie/Shepherd mix who was surrendered to us when her previous owners became too ill to care for her. Jesse hasn’t quite shown her full personality at the shelter yet, as she’s not used to the sometimes chaotic environment. Still, we’re confident that this sweet girl will turn out to be an amazing family dog; she just needs the stability of a good home and the opportunity to warm up to her new family. We consider Jesse to be a “level 1” dog and think she’d be appropriate for owners of all experience levels. We recommend that she go to a home with children 8 years of age or older.

Lucy Spend some time with Lucy and soon enough, you’ll find yourself singing along to “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.” Ironically, this sweet 8-year-old Bichon Frise mix is quite the dancer. Hold up a treat and she’ll happily do pirouettes for you. We consider Lucy to be a “level 1” dog, as she is suitable for owners of any experience level. We require that she go to a home with children who are at least 8 years of age or older. Lucy is very gentle and greets strangers with a wagging tail and an open heart. Come meet this lovable girl today!

Snuggles Aptly named, Snuggles is an affectionate 8-year-old Pekingese who adores cuddling with people. She was brought to the shelter along with Rascal because her previous owner was unable to care for her due to health problems. Snuggles is friendly, quick to warm up to new people, and housetrained. What’s not to love? She’s a “level 1” dog which means that she’d be okay with owners of any experience level. We require that she go to a home with children who are at least 8 years of age or older. It would be ideal if Snuggles and Rascal could be adopted together, but they can also be adopted individually.

Rascal Beneath his furry exterior, Rascal is quite the sweetheart. This 10-year-old Shih Tzu is a loyal and friendly dog who is also housetrained. He came to the shelter with Snuggles because his previous owner was unable to care for him due to health problems. Despite being in an unfamiliar environment, Rascal seems to take things in stride. He is a joy to be around and simply put, he’s full of life. He loves to play and he’ll happily come bounding back to you when you call his name. Rascal is a “level 1” dog and would be easy for owners of any experience level. We require that he go to a home where the children are at least 8 years old. We would love it if Rascal and Snuggles could be adopted together, but they can also be adopted individually.
